Gold Sniffer Measurements on Thin Sections

Introduction

The Gold Sniffer uses the analysis of high resolution digital pictures taken using visible light to identify gold particles as small as 1.6 microns on the surface of mineral samples. To verify these gold detection capabilities, thin section samples were measured by the Gold Sniffer to identify the gold particles on them. This provides a direct comparison of the gold particles identified by the Gold Sniffer’s optical techniques to the gold particles identified on the thin sections using standard optical techniques, thereby confirming the gold detection capabilities of the Gold Sniffer.

Results

Below are Gold Sniffer images alongside images of thin section samples taken using standard techniques.  The scale and orientation have been chosen to provide the closest comparison possible.  In the Gold Sniffer images, the detected gold is marked with the colour magenta and red crosses.  The thin section images are from polarized light optical microscopic measurements, so the colours of the minerals can be quite different from the Gold Sniffer images.  The probes (yellow crosses with the letter A) on the Gold Sniffer images have been located on or near the identified gold particles.  The shapes of the surrounding mineral particles have been used to navigate and provide a comparison with the thin section measurements. For samples 138-009 and 145-020 a comparison of the gold particles detected by the Gold Sniffer and thin section measurements is made, and good agreement is obtained.

Conclusions

The gold particles detected by the Gold Sniffer on the thin section samples 138-009 and 145-020 are at the same locations and are the same sizes as the gold particles detected using standard techniques. This demonstrates that the Gold Sniffer can reliably detect micron sized gold particles with similar accuracy as conventional thin section measurements are able to.
